We are proud to commemorate the GCA’s Centennial Year with the publication of To Build New York: 100 Years of Infrastructure.

Our history as an association is intertwined with the history of New York City and the projects built by GCA members are relied upon by millions of people each day to provide the vital infrastructure that maintains public health and mobility.

“To Build New York: 100 Years of Infrastructure tells the story of how previous generations built and rebuilt the world’s greatest metropolis,” states Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in the forwod of the book.  “The book’s fascinating photographs give life to the enormity, complexity, and difficulty of the city’s great construction projects – and the backbreaking work involved.  When we get on the subway or turn on the water or flip a switch in our homes, we can think of the faces we see in this book,” Mayor Bloomberg concludes.

It is no secret the MTA is in financial trouble, but something you may not have known was just how much trouble they are in. The business payroll tax, which was implemented as part of the bailout package last spring, will bring in $400 million less than expected. Take that and add it to the $143 million the Governor cut from the MTA in the Deficit Reduction Plan. All this is on top of the deficit which began with the market crash in 2008. In response to this bad news Moody’s downgraded the MTA’s credit rating.
